Problem
Statement
The Maricopa Institute produced an online tutorial to teach beginning
HTML, referred to as the Volcano Tutorial as we constructed a web site
about volcanoes. This tutorial was very text heavy and needed to be evaluated
and redesigned.

Situation
Analysis
The overall goal of the Volcano Tutorial was to teach learners how to
hard code HTML. The tutorial was web-based, but could be downloaded to
speed up load times. This tutorial not only taught me basic HTML code,
but also how to evaluate web pages and web sites, on a visual and instructional
level.

Rationale
The reason for evaluating and redesigning the tutorial was to improve
the overall quality of the instructional web site. The text required more
chunking into smaller pieces in order for the learner to retain all of
the pertinent information. There was very little white space on the individual
pages, with each page requiring the learner to scroll vertically several
times. More graphics and demonstration were needed, as well as a status
indicator for the learners to see exactly where they were in each section.

Results
Report
This tutorial was evaluated and redesigned by several instructional designers.
Each designer that evaluated this tutorial came to a different conclusion
and included different suggestions for the redesign. The end result of
this project was a web rubric that outlined the visual and instructional
items that were not to be compromised and those that were subjective.

Evidence
of Value
The value added in this project was two-fold: for myself as an instructional
designer focusing on technology to evaluate and redesign a tutorial, and
for the Maricopa Institute to receive valuable feedback from learners.

Reflections
This was a great
project in many ways; it was a good tool that incorporated many aspects
of web design. I feel that the Volcano Tutorial met the learning objectives;
I did indeed learn how to code HTML. I also learned about good web design
and effective instructional design on the Internet, experiencing first
hand what it is like. I keep this project in mind each time I set out
to create a web-based training project, and I refer often to the rubric
that we developed while discussing our redesign suggestions.

Responsibilities
Met
Responsibility #2- Designs instruction or human performance strategy to
meet the needs of learners. I have me this responsibility by evaluating
and redesigning the volcano tutorial course to more adequately meet the
needs of the target audience.
Responsibility #6-Uses
incisive and relevant assessment and evaluation techniques. I have met
this responsibility through the evaluation of the final product by measuring
it to an evaluation rubric including web layout and instructional design
principles.
