Problem Statement
The Front Range Chapter of the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI) needed someone to publish the monthly newsletter, The Criterion. The Vice President of Publications is the least sought after position on the ISPI board of directors, due to the time intensive nature of the position. When I volunteered to co-chair this position, the chapter had been receiving a two-page flyer each month, and wanted a full-scale newsletter, including articles on items of interest to the chapter.

Situation Analysis
There are approximately 200 Front Range Chapter members that rely on this newsletter to provide upcoming meeting information, news and chapter events. The newsletter is also sent to the New Mexico Chapter, to keep our neighbors apprised of our speakers and events. The newsletter is the primary print media for keeping the members informed, and it is a benefit to the members.

Rationale
The other co-vice president and myself chose to publish the newsletter in Adobe FrameMaker, because it had a 3-column newsletter template that created a more professional appearance. We also set up a newsletter publication schedule, surveyed the membership for peak areas of interest and lobbied for an updated membership database. We included standard columns for job seekers and online resources as well as featuring board member positions near election time.

Results Report
The current newsletter effectively reaches the ISPI Front Range Chapter membership. This was proven when an impromptu meeting was planned after that month's newsletter had already been published and mailed out, the attendance at that meeting was less than one half of the average attendance. The power of the Criterion has not been underestimated since.

Evidence of Value
The Criterion effectively disseminates meeting information, solicits articles and provides a means of communication within the Front Range Chapter of ISPI. Several members at each meeting comment upon The Criterion, the charter members have expressed their appreciation for the new look and feel and the current articles of interest to the membership.

Reflections
This has been a wonderful way to meet other people in the training industry. ISPI really caters to instructional designers and we tend to focus on the technology side of design. Playing a part on a board of directors for an international society has helped me network and learn the value of real collaboration when there is no class time to help fill the gap. I am proud of what The Criterion has become and am making plans to take the newsletter to the next step, online. I would like to publish an online newsletter and email the link to the membership. An online version will cut production costs, reach the audience even faster and allow for a more colorful and graphic media that can link to various information on the Internet. Overall this has been a very beneficial experience.

Responsibilities Met
Responsibility #1-Continued improvement of a professional practice that requires critical inquiry, professional development, and reflective practice. I have meet this criteria not only by being an active member of ISPI, but by providing a critical means of communication from the ISPI Front Range Chapter to the members.
